Hinduism, Buddhism. action, seen as bringing upon oneself inevitable results, good or bad, either in this life or in a reincarnation: in Hinduism one of the means of reaching Brahman.
That in a literal sense is what karma means.
I think karma has its own interpretation for each individual. Also some believe in it and some don't know of its very existence.
I for one am a strong believer and interpret it in my own fashion.
